Death Be Not Proud

The novel, Death Be Not Proud, by John Gunther, is the story of the struggle of a child to stay alive. Johnny Gunther Jr. ’s constant hope got him out of bed every morning with a positive attitude. His outright opposition to the fact that he was going to die and his determination not to, kept a fiery spirit in him so that he didn’t give up. Johnny’s stubborn determination to not accept defeat at so early an age, along with the tremendous courage he showed when realizing that he must accept his defeat, is a strong point portrayed in this novel. Johnny’s hope, determination, and courage kept his death at bay. One of the main reasons that Johnny remained alive for so much longer than he should have lived, was the hope that he possessed. He hoped every day of his illness that he would get better, that his parents would be spared their grief, or that some doctor would come up with a revolutionary idea that would heal him. Because of his hope, Johnny never complained or protested during the entire course of his illness. He always obeyed the doctors’ wishes and followed their instructions to a  «T » because he wanted so desparatly to get well. Although he realized that eventually his life would end, he still never gave up the hope that perhaps he could outsmart his fate to die, if just to steal a few extra hours. Each day, until his last, the determination Johnny had to get well, live a normal life, and even maintain his schoolwork was phenominal. After being away from school for sixteen months, being tested constantly by doctors, and having a rapidly deteriorationg brain, Johnny still managed to graduate with his class and be accepted into Harvard. Throughout his illness, Johnny always had an unwavering will to survive, to awake the next morning and find that he was well, that he had only been dreaming the nightmare of his illness. When Johnny awoke each morning however, he felt the bandage on his head and realized that he was living this horrific nightmare. But even through this tremendous disappointment, Johnny kept fighting, determined to recuperate. Johnny should be admired for not giving up under the intense emotional burden of knowing that each breath may be his last. Johnny’s story is one that will be remembered because of the courage he had. If he had had any fears of death, they were unknown because of his consideration for others and not wanting to burden others with his troubles. One can only imagine what it must have been like to lie awake at night alone in a hospital room, wondering what it is like to die and to awaken the next morning, shed all questions and fears of the night before, and cheerfully greet those around you. Johnny’s inner struggle and turmoil was something that no one knows nor will ever know. Throughout his many medical treatments and moments of pain, Johnny was always strong and brave. He always smiled and hung in there fighting. Even with his final unconcious breath, there was still animation in him, he was still determined to live. Thankfully he died with a smile on his lips, without pain, with dignity, and with courage and strength to face the next world he would enter. Johnny’s gallant fight for life, against the most hopeless odds, should convey a message to anyone who has ever been ill. Through a child’s hope, determination and courage when about to die, a for of a hero is made. Johnny’s manner in facing the awful reality of dying is something that is looked up to by all and we should all strive to achieve this manner. Johnny Gunther accepted his fate to die and not live his life to the fullest with complete acceptance, if not full understanding. By the story of his life and death, we are in awe of how one so young could have achieved an attitude that most people will never reach.

In Miltons paradise lost, god Essay

In Milton’s Paradise Lost, God is portrayed as having limited influence and contact with our world. This is perhaps a result of his respect for free will/conscience. This lack of contact is supported by one; God’s passiveness, there are several situations in the book in which God seems like he should be able to influence events but he simply doesn’t act. When he does act, he acts indirectly. God seems to execute his plans through either his angels or his son. Finally, perhaps the best indication of God’s limited connections is in the cases where God uses complicated, elaborate plans to do things that if he really had 100% power he would perform simply and immaculately. In the book Paradise Lost, God plays a relatively passive role considering that he is by far the most significant character in this book. He seems to sit up on his heavenly throne and observes rather than interact with his creations. A good case of this is in Book three lines 80-90, when God watches Satan ascending from hell. It would seem that when he was alerted by Uriel, the archangel would have been a good time to intervene and smite down Satan. It almost seems like Milton’s God wants the events of Paradise Lost to transpire because he yields so many times at so many opportunities to stop Satan. Satan should have been stopped at the very beginning. God must have foreseen this incident (the partaking of the forbidden fruit,) after all, does he not have sight of the future, past and present? (Book Three lines 75-80) Sadly, no-one will ever know what God was planning when he allowed Satan to run rampant in the garden. Or then again, maybe God wasn’t planning anything at all but rather leaving events to unfold without divine intervention, thus his seeming respect for free will. The only problem with that theory though, is that God punished Adam and Eve for making a decision with the free will that he gave them. Two other instances make cases against God’s absolute power. Why was hell so easily escaped by Satan? One would think that a Purgatory created by God himself would be impenetrable. Even stranger is the case with the Angelic War. Although for the most part symbolic, God either was not capable or at least unwilling to strike down Satan’s attempted conquest before it began. Instead, God chose once again to remain passive and allow things to go along for awhile. A good question to ask at this point is just what are God’s intentions? If he truly wanted a perfect heaven with conformist angels, what is stopping him from taking their free will? That leads to the point that possibly the reason why God’s influence is limited is his own conscience, based on his respect of free will. When God does act in the story, it is almost exclusively indirectly through his Son, (as in Book Nine,) or through his Archangels. The most well-known case where God acts through his Son is when God sent him down to be sacrificed upon the cross. Although this specific event does not occur within this story, the reasoning behind it is lengthily discussed especially in Book Three. This however, only supports the thesis if one believes that Jesus is the son of God rather than the Christian view that God IS Jesus. (John, 8:58) Based on how Milton writes, it shows that he is using the interpretation of the Bible in which Jesus was created by God. Jesus plays a sympathetic role when it comes to mankind and often influences God’s decisions on what to do about Adam and Eve. He persuades God to allow him to go down to heaven to inform Adam about his state of sin. In this case, Jesus actually influences God rather than the usual case with God giving orders and Jesus acting carrying them out. God also acts a lot through his throng of angels. The archangels are his main instruments of manipulation. Of the seven archangels, Raphael, Michael, and Gabriel are the three most influential. God acts through Raphael most often. Raphael plays a large role in starting in Book Five lines 246-249 â€Å"So spake th’Etetnal Father, and fulfill’d All Justice: nor delay’d the winged Saint (Raphael)after his charge receiv’d. † Raphael then proceeds down to the Garden to warn Adam and Eve of the impending danger posed by Satan. Raphael also spends Book Six and Book Seven informing Adam of the war in heaven and then telling him the nature of his own creation. Michael and Gabriel have slightly smaller roles than Raphael does; but they do get a chance to enact God’s will when he orders them to lead the faithful Angels in the war against Satan. The final case to prove God’s limited interactions and influence is when God seems to have to work around rules that he must have created himself. A good example of this is when he prepares for the redemption of man. It simply doesn’t make sense that if God desires to redeem his creations that he simply doesn’t grant them redemption from their sins. Instead he schemes up the elaborate plan to send his son down to receive punishment in place of man. Once again, this could be explained by God having to act within the parameters of what his conscience will allow, (regarding free will). Maybe God has to do these elaborate things so that he can justify to himself the redemption of man. Maybe he thinks that it is only right that somebody receives punishment. Cases similar in nature occur when God didn’t keep Satan from entering the Garden of Eden and when he had to send the great flood. If not for his respect for free will, God wouldn’t have had to allow mankind to sink so low. In Paradise Lost, Milton presents a God that is strangely limited in his actions and influence with his own creations. Whether through passiveness, indirectness, or a conscious â€Å"distancing of himself† God seems to allow many things to happen without direct intervention. However, this is not really a novel concept; people throughout history have questioned the concept of an all-powerful God in a very imperfect world.

Human Virtues Essay

Virtues consist of a set of character strengths, these strengths represent good character. They are wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. Wisdom and courage are two virtues that my Grand Father encompassed. He was a very strong and knowledgeable man. His life revolved around going against all odds, he truly believed in beating whatever he was at battle against. His perseverance was with him till the day he died. He passed away at the age of 65, he wasn’t that old, yet he was a very wise man. His personality was filled with love, care and compassion for others. Very open-minded, when he met someone he was the one who always found the good in them, no matter who they were. If a situation would arise, he never just considered what was likely to occur, he looked at the â€Å"whole† picture. His love for learning was obvious, one of his hobbies was reading. When asked why, he would reply, â€Å"the more you read, the more you know†. He was a stickler for making us do well in school. He wanted each of us to have a good education to build our lives out of. He was a Lieutenant in the Federal Prison System for 25 years, after retiring from the Army, his life here was to provide for and protect his family, which he done with a happy, energetic, and determined attitude. His gratitude for life was amazing, he taught us all the meaning of Live, Laugh, Love. He walked this life on faith, while teaching others how to do the same along the way. Although his life at home was well rounded and energized by his love, his life at work was a very emotional one. It became as if life in prison, was life for him too. He developed emotional attachments to the inmates, He cared for them, he knee their situations, and he knew why they were there. His courage allowed him to become involved in their lives, which paid off in his favor the night he and some others were held hostage in Virginia Federal Prison, by a convicted serial killer. Yet once again, he put forth is faith, his knowledge and courage and talked the inmate down. He helped release the others, and saved many lives includ8ng his own. Wisdom and courage I think are two virtues that we all should possess. I try to live by good character, I think back on all of the talks me and my Grand Father had, and all the years in between. I smile and think to myself, â€Å"yes, I sure wish I could be just like him†.

Psychology - Critical Thinking Piece Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Psychology - Critical Thinking Piece - Essay Example For this reason, a lot of psychologists and sociologists have considered the building of a positive self-esteem to be the best solution in solving psychological and social problems. (Leary, 1999a: 32 – 33) In line with the effort of psychologists in measuring the self-esteem of a person, sociometer theory was developed in order to serve as a psychological tool that measures the quality of social relationship in life of a person. (Leary, 1999b: 33) Personally, I do agree that developing a high self-esteem is essential part of our lives in terms of being able to socially cope with other people in our environment. However, measuring the degree of self-esteem in each individual with the use of the sociometer theory seems to be illogical because of the so many immeasurable factors such as culture and traditions as well as other negative experiences in life such as criticism, failure, peer rejection (Leary, 1999a: 34), sexual abuse or maltreatment that could either directly or indirectly affect the self-esteem of a human being. For example: some parents who lives in the Asian countries may use physical abuse as a method of rearing a child. On the contrary, most parents who resides in a Western country are trying to avoid physical abuse in rearing a child because of the law that protects the children from any forms of physical harm. Even with the use of research survey, we need to face the fact that it is not possible to accurately measure the exact number of children who has experienced physical abuse or harm which could affect the low self-esteem of a person in each geographic region. According to Leary (1999a: 33), â€Å"sociometer continuously monitors the environment for cues regarding the degree to which the individual is being accepted versus rejected by other people.† Perhaps it is possible that the use of sociometer could detect whether or not the increase or decrease in the self-esteem in general could

U02d2 Stark 2 Legislation Review Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

U02d2 Stark 2 Legislation Review - Essay Example ns are not allowed to refer patients to any designated health service where the physician or the immediate family will be benefited with a financial relationship, unless statutory exception exists. The fundamental reason to develop Stark II was to ensure that over utilization of the health care items are not made, and to provide the patients with a choice of health care that they can use, rather than limiting them to a single provider, or health care organization (Janney, 2005). Also, this was developed to help ensure there is fair competition among the health care industry and there is no form of monopoly that is set in the market. The enactment of this law has led to a positive aspect for the industry as it allows the patients to only take the tests that are needed rather than needing to take tests which are not needed but only given as a financial interest of the doctors. Also the patient can receive accurate information when a third party is involved. The SOX law was introduced to help ensure there is a protection of the public and the stakeholders to ensure that there are no accounting errors or any form of fraudulent practices. There is a direct relation between the SOX and the Stark II, as both of these acts are basically to ensure that there is no form of inaccuracy or frauds in the accounting and is mainly intended to assist the general public to ensure that businesses and organizations do not work in a method where the general public is harmed in any manner (Sarbanes-Oxley Act, 2006). The two acts work in a manner where the doctors are required to maintain the internal accounting controls and also to ensure that the all accounting information is recorded accurately to control the ability of the parties to work in collusion with others (Pozgar, 2006). In conclusion, it is clear that compliance with the rules and regulations will lead to higher costs for the doctors and the hospitals, however these are developed to ensure that the end customers, i.e. the

ESL II Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

ESL II - Essay Example On the other hand, some students would be happy to wait and listen to their teachers of the lesson delivered and then develop strong concepts in learning English. Some students are keen to learn the basics or grammar as the foundation of learning English while others would be try to put the words in place by listening to the language conversation. It is, therefore, important for the teachers to switch to right approaches by understanding the needs of the classroom. Traditional methods The traditional methods of teaching English as a foreign language talk about the approaches of teaching English in a way that has been followed over the years. Various educationalists and eminent personalities could be spotted who have learnt English in the traditional approach. The traditional methods have been described below. Grammar Translation The grammar translation approach is one of the oldest approaches that were carried out in earlier days for teaching Latin in the countries of Europe. This is an intellectual way of learning language which was later applied by the teachers in the lessons of English as a foreign language. The method concentrates more on the reading and writing of English language. The speaking and the listening skills are not really tested in this approach. The teacher provides the students with the grammatical exercises and the students are asked to solve the problems. The students are first questioned orally and followed by answering the exercises in writing which is the major part of grammar translation. The only communication in this method is between the student and the teacher where the teacher plays the authoritarian role. Example of grammar translation method includes explaining the grammatical rules and concepts with the help of presentation, written exercises to the students. Direct Method The direct method of teaching developed languages in the nineteenth century when the educationalists observed the child language learning trends and applied t he direct method of learning English as a foreign language for the learners. In this method, the translation of the foreign language is not required. The students are required to read aloud the specialized texts of grammar and vocabulary in English language. The emphasis is put on guided conversation of the students where the teachers play an important role in helping the students to understand the usage of various words in English. Examples of the direct method of learning English as a foreign language includes conduct of exercises using fill-in-the-blanks, dictation and demonstration to the students by the teachers. The students also required to undertake comprehension exercises directly in English in order to understand the foreign language through the direct method. Audio lingual The audio-lingual method of teaching English as a foreign language developed from the time of Second World War when the army personnel were trained to speak in different languages such as German, French , Japanese, etc. This method has been later applied for teaching English

ARTICLE BRIEF Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

ARTICLE BRIEF - Essay Example v. Commissioner, 350 U.S. 46 (1955). According to the ruling, capital assets include the property held by the taxpayer but does not include goods in trade or assets held by the taxpayer for the primary purpose of resale. It is, therefore, viable to conclude that Haig Simmons did not incur a loss on capital and hence the loss is categorized as ordinary. The Supreme Court held the verdict of the Court of Appeals and the Tax Court that the petitioner’s future business transactions are designed to caution its manufacturing business against the price increase that would reduce the profit margin. In this case, Anderson (2001) declares that the loss emanating from such transactions should be included as an income when determining the tax payable. Similar ruling was made on March 7, 1988 in the case Arkansas Best Corp. v. Commissioner, 485 U.S. 212 (1988). In the case, the court noted that future transaction had a consistent trend of giving rise to huge gains that went untaxed. The court therefore held that the petitioner should be slapped with a tax burden with the future loss as part of taxable income. In conclusion, losses emanating from future contracts form a part of the loss on inventory and hence the amount in the transaction should be incorporated as an income to the enterprise but not as a loss on

Discuss the main causes and effects of gun crime in the USA Essay

Discuss the main causes and effects of gun crime in the USA - Essay Example Doctors in such hospitals are appealing to the government to control the way it issues guns to the public (Boseley, 2013, p.1). This paper looks at the major causes of gun crimes and its effect to the American population. One of the causes of gun crimes is the uncontrolled offer of guns to the public by the government. The government makes it easy for people to access guns for private use (Boseley, 2013, p.1). When people get the guns easily they are likely to misuse them in purposes that are not related to personal safety. Further, the fact that the government has reduced regulation on gun accessibility makes criminals easily access them for their activities. This has made it challenging for the government to control the manner people use their guns. Another cause of increased gun crimes is the belief by the people that acquiring private guns makes them safer (Boseley, 2013, p.1). People in United States think that owning a gun is important if they are to protect their families and their properties. This increases the number of individuals who own guns in the country per household. In fact, when the number of individuals owning private guns increases, people become less secure (Stray, 2013, p.1). This is from the fact that some people settle their differences using the guns which result in injuries or deaths. Actually, instead of guns enhancing personal security and safety, it is increasing insecurity in the country (Stray, 2013, p.1). In addition, issues of mental illness have contributed to increased gun crimes in the United States. When people with mental illness have easy accessibility of guns, they are likely to use them to commit crimes unwillingly (Boseley, 2013, p.1). Mentally ill persons are likely to use guns as toys which end up harming others, especially if they are not monitored by sober people. Mentally ill persons also lack the ability to reason on what is right for them and thus

Public and Private Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Public and Private Culture - Essay Example There is a great danger of limiting one self to the boundaries of home just like a caterpillar in a cocoon for the rest of its life. The world is a garden of different flowers with various colors, aroma, beauty, and form that needs to tread and the school is just one among the many forms that we dip our feet into. One gets educated not to stay home and encapsulate himself/herself to the four corners of knowledge rather, a person moves out of the home, from the school, educated and fully equipped to conquer the world not with guns and wars but with the knowledge and skills to a better today. It should be an educated college student’s goal to be propelled to the world outside the home, family or culture where there is much to be discovered and even more to be had. Miss Moore’s effort in â€Å"The Lesson† to draw the children from their little world to go out and look at the big picture is highly commendable especially with her effort to bring them out from their li mited knowledge as their poverty allows them to have. There is a lot to learn and so many times, one is not fully equipped with the needed knowledge and skill to perform well in the society like Miss Moore despite the education that she claimed. Understanding the many facets of society by considering different cultures as well as the different roles of every individual gives a better view and comprehension of one’s rights as well as responsibilities. It is quite impossible to separate private from public culture just as it is difficult to separate public from private life.
